ICNEM '17 - CARGESE, CORSICA

ICNEM '17 Poster Winners
Congratulations to the three winners of the poster competition held during the ICNEM'17 conference!
1st place (300 Euros): Maxime Harazi - Time Reversal of Ultrasound in Granular Media
2nd place (150 Euros): Ariana Astorga - Evidence of Nonlinear Elastic Behavior in Buildings
3rd place (100 Euros): Harold Berjamin - A 3D Model of Nonlinear Elasticity, Hysteresis, and Nonequilibrium Dynamics

Welcome
The 22nd annual International Conference on Nonlinear Elasticity in Materials (ICNEM) will be held in Cargèse, Corsica (France) May 28 - June 3, 2017. Cargèse is a village on the west coast of the island of Corsica (Wikipedia | YouTube).  The conference center, the Institut d’Études Scientifiques de Cargèse (I.E.S.C., Menasina, F-20130 CARGÈSE, France  -  Phone: +33 (0)4 95 26 80 40), provides a relaxing and enjoyable environment that optimizes fruitful scientific interactions.  The institute is located close to the beach and within walking distance from Cargèse - 20 minutes via the main road or 15 minutes via a goat path.

The Institute is hosting the EGRIN summer school the same week  with a joint ICNEM/EGRIN session organized on the afternoon of May 29 .  The  workshop on passive imaging, hosted by the University of Grenoble,  will be held the following week.

We expect approximately 45 participants with a good blend of students, post-docs, junior scientists, and more renowned ones.  This should be an exciting meeting.  We look forward to seeing you all in Cargese this summer!

Best regards,
Marcel Remillieux & Paul Johnson

Invited Presentations
In addition to regular presentations, there will be a number of invited speakers giving longer ~50 min presentations on special topics of interest to ICNEM.
  • Nonlinearity in Unconsolidated Granular Materials - Xiaoping Jia, Professor, Institut Langevin, University Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée, France
  • Ambient Noise Imaging - Michel Campillo, Professor, Institut des Sciences de la Terre, University Joseph Fourier, France
  • Nonlinear Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation - Laurence J. Jacobs, Professor, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA
  • Numerical Modeling of Nonlinear Elasticity - Bruno Lombard, Research Scientist, Laboratory of Mechanics and Acoustics, CNRS, France
  • Nonlinearity Associated with Damage in Faults - Yehuda Ben Zion, Professor, University of Southern California, USA
  • Nonlinear Phasing and Dephasing of Three Wave Mixing of Stoneley Waves - David L. Johnson, Retired Research Scientist, Schlumberger, USA

   •  ICNEM '17 Conference Program (V 5.24)
   • ICNEM '17 Abstracts Book (V 5.24)

Poster Sessions
Poster sessions will be held from 2:00 to 3:00 PM on Tuesday (5/30), Thursday (6/01), & Friday (6/02).  Presenters are expected to attend all three poster sessions.  Prizes will be awarded for the three best poster presentations.

Registration / Reservations
Registration follows a two-step process - abstract submission + actual registration.  (See our registration PDF file.  The deadline for abstract submission was March 31st. )  First create an account on the our registration site.  Once abstracts have been reviewed and the selection process is completed, you will be invited to go through the second step of the process - registration fees, lodging preferences, food preferences, etc.  The deadline for this second step was May 12th.

Once you log into the
ICNEM/IESC website, you will have access to the registration form.  The Accommodation options include A) room in a shared flat in Cargese,  B) hotel,  C) room at the institute, or D) or I don’t need accommodation.  One may choose from a single or shared room.

If you opt to stay in a hotel or make your own lodging arrangements, the registration fee is  €700.  If you stay in a shared room at the institute or in a single room in town the fee is €890.

If you select the “without lodging” option, the registration fee is reduced to
€700, but you are responsible for your lodging.  If you select "onsite lodging", IESC will book the room(s) for you in town according to your preferences which you can specify in the “Details” box.

We ask that all students and post-docs stay in shared rooms. Cargese is a small village.  Space is very limited, even more because we are sharing the facility with the EGRIN conference the same week.  If you decide to make your own reservation and Cargese is fully booked, Sagone, a larger town is about 15 min away by car between Cargese and Ajaccio.  Sagone has more hotels and lodging opportunities.  The drive between Sagone and Cargese is not unpleasant at all.

The
€890 registration fee includes...
   a) shared or single room at IESC or in an apartment in Cargèse (depending on availability) from Sunday  (May 28th) to Saturday (June, 3rd),
   b) aperitif-style welcome reception on Monday (May 29) evening,
   c) conference lunches,
   d) coffee breaks,
   e) breakfasts (If staying at IESC, breakfast will be served there.  If at a downtown apartment, breakfast will be served at a café/bar.),
   f) evening diner Thursday (June 1) at the Casablanca beach restaurant in Piana  (for shared rooms and single rooms only), and
   g) round-trip bus transportation from Ajaccio airport to Cargèse.

Please chose the appropriate fee according to what you specified in your registration form.  For more information, see our registration
PDF file.

Transportation / Visiting Corsica
It is recommended to travel to Cargèse through the nearest airport or harbor located in Ajaccio. Scenic routes through Calvi or Bastia also are possible but will lead to much longer drive times. Average drive times from main towns/airports are as follows...
   Ajaccio – Cargèse: 50 km / 31 mi / 1.5 hr
   Bastia – Cargèse: 154 km / 95 mi / 3.15 hr
   Calvi – Cargèse: 104 km / 64 mi / 2.5 hr

ICNEM Shuttle - Free organized bus shuttles for ICNEM participants will be provided from Ajaccio to Cargese on Sunday, May 28 and from Cargèse to Ajaccio on Saturday, June 3.  On arrival (Sunday May 28), the buses will collect participants in Ajaccio at the airport in the late-afternoon.  On departure, the buses will leave Cargèse after breakfast.  More details on the exact shuttle schedule will be provided as we approach the start of the conference.

Public Bus - Buses travel from Ajaccio to Cargèse Mondays to Saturdays.  There is no bus travel on Sundays.

Taxis - You may pre-book your taxi at a rate of €100  from Ajaccio to Cargèse during the day (€140 for early, late night,  and Sunday transfers).  This is the most expensive option.

Car Rental - Available directly at the Ajaccio Airport through a number of companies.

Tourism Information - Trip Advisor | Corsica Travel Guide | Wiki Travel

Weather - Average May daytime temperatures in Cargèse are  22°C / 72°F and 12°C / 54°F at night.  June temperatures average 26°C / 79°F in the day and 16°C / 61°F at night.

Lodging - As covered above, lodging will be provided for most participants in shared apartments in the village.  A few will be hosted at the institute.  Studios and larger apartments are available at extra cost.
