Conference Program, Locations, and Social Dinner

Our first day will be in a special venue in the heart of historical center of Prague in the headquarters of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The remainder of the conference will be held at the Institute of Thermomechanics.

The meeting will begin with a welcome drink at Pivovar Ládví Cobolis Brewery on Sunday June 9 at 16:00. This will allow attendees to have a taste of Czech beer and to familiarize themselves with the main conference area.

Our social dinner on Wednesday, June 12 will be aboard a historical boat, giving us a unique view of Prague’s scenery.


Travel information

Prague has a very efficient public transport service. We encourage you to use it. Regardless if you arrive by plane, train or bus, there will be a line which will get you around. You need to buy a ticket before entering the vehicle. Tckets are available in newsstands and vending machines. The backbone of Prague’s commuting is the metro network. The Institute of Thermomechanics is on the line C near metro station “Ladvi”. Google maps or Mapy.cc will help you plan your trip.

Example - To get from the airport to the conference venue, take bus No.59 to Metro Station Nadrazi Veleslavin. From there, take Metro Line A to Muzeum where you switch to Metro Line C to get to Ladvi. (Map)

When using a taxi, it is best to use established companies like UberTaxi and Liftago.

If you plan arriving by car, use the parking lot at the Institute as finding a parking spot downtown can be tricky. If you want to park at the Institute, let us know in advance.

The Czech Republic does not use the Euro as a currency but rather Czech crowns. The exchange rate is ~100 CZK = 4 EUR or USD. It is not necessary to exchange your money as you can pay by card almost everywhere. If you do exchange money, it may be worthwhile to check your bank fees. In case you want to have some cash, withdraw from a regular ATM.

If you need to ask for help or directions, approach younger people. The elderly may not know English. The sockets for electricity are EU standard of the French/Belgian type.


Lodging Information

To keep the feel of ICNEM which has always been quite social even after conference hours, it is advisable for participants not to spread out too much around the city. Look for accommodations in either the social area near the city center where most people in Prague would like to live or the more simple and affordable conference venue area. Social area lodging options include Mama Shelter, Hotel Belvedere, and Hotel Klára. Hotel Mazurka is in the conference area. Alternatively, look for AirBnB offers. (ICNEM 2024 Map)

The commute between the conference and social areas should not take longer than 15 minutes by the Metro.


Introduction, Welcome, and Overview

The 26th ICNEM meeting returns to Prague, Czech Republic after thirteen years and nine ICNEM editions. The meeting will take place from June 9 - June 14, 2024. You will be hosted by the Institute of Thermomechanics of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

To maintain the ICNEM tradition of an informal meeting with plenty of interaction, the number of participants is limited to 60. Pre-registration is mandatory. As of March 5, a good mixture of new and regular participants have registered. Still, we ask that everyone register quickly to help us with the preparations.

The general topic of ICNEM is the elastic nonlinear behavior of solids and soft matter. The conference focuses on both basic research and applications in this area and represents the state of the art in this domain.

Conference Fee

The €400 fee includes our welcome reception, daily access to the conference room, coffee breaks, and one conference dinner. Guests are welcome at the reception and the conference dinner for a €100 fee. Information on social programs will be updated. Lodging is not included in the conference fee.
